Den Haag of 's-Gravenhage is met 475.831 inwoners (1 februari 2008, bron: CBS) de derde gemeente van Nederland. Den Haag is de hoofdstad van de provincie Zuid-Holland. Het is de residentie van de Nederlandse nationale overheid en van het koninklijk huis. Al is Den Haag niet de hoofdstad van Nederland, het vervult voor een belangrijk deel de rol die meestal aan een hoofdstad voorbehouden is. Het is ook de vestigingsplaats van de Hoge Raad. Daarnaast is de stad een centrum voor de internationale rechtspraak en vredespolitiek, er zijn vele tribunalen en onderzoeksinstituten gevestigd in de stad.

Vanouds werd voor de plaats de naam Die Haghe of Den Hag(h)e gebruikt. Vanaf 1602/1603 gebruikte het stadsbestuur officieel de naam 's-Gravenhage, die als deftiger werd beschouwd en een samentrekking is van 'des Graven ha(a)ge' (oftewel: de Haag <=bos> van de Graaf <van Holland>).

Sinds 1990 gebruikt de gemeente consequent de (verkorte) naam Den Haag in plaats van 's-Gravenhage, ook al vanwege de internationalisering van de hofstad, haar huidige status van mondiaal justitieel centrum (met o.a. het Internationaal Gerechtshof en het Internationaal Strafhof), en tevens om aan te sluiten bij buitenlandse benamingen als The Hague (Engels), La Haye (Frans), Den Haag (Duits), Haag (Deens), La Haya (Spaans), L'Aia (Italiaans) Haia (Portugees), Gaaga (Russisch) en Haga (Roemeens).

In 1990 werd een voorstel om de gemeentenaam officieel in Den Haag te veranderen echter afgewezen. Beide namen zijn echter vanouds officieel toegestaan. Dit in tegenstelling tot Den Bosch, dat officieel alleen 's-Hertogenbosch heet.

In paspoorten/identiteitskaarten en officiële stukken die uitgegeven worden door de gemeente staat altijd: 's-Gravenhage. De spoorwegen en de ANWB-wegwijzers gebruiken de kortere naam Den Haag.

The Hague (with capital T; Dutch: Den Haag, officially also 's-Gravenhage, "The Count's Hedge") is the third-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with a population of 475,580 (as of January 1, 2006) (population of agglomeration: 600,000) and an area of approximately 100 km². It is located in the west of the country, in the province of South Holland, of which it is also the provincial capital. The Hague is, like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, part of the conglomerate metropolitan area Randstad, with a population of 6,659,300 inhabitants.

The Hague is the actual seat of government, but, somewhat anomalously, not the official capital of the Netherlands, a role set aside by the Dutch constitution for Amsterdam.

The Hague is the home of the Eerste Kamer (first chamber) and the Tweede Kamer (second chamber), respectively the upper and lower houses forming the Staten Generaal (literally the "Estates-General"). Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands lives and works in The Hague. All foreign embassies and government ministries are located in the city, as well as the Hoge Raad der Nederlanden (The Supreme Court), the Raad van State (Council of State) and many lobbying organisations.
